Your Signature Talk

Updated: Oct 23

Creating a Signature talk isn't always as easy as it sounds but this post will help you learn how to create your signature talk. Here are some easy steps.

Signature Talk

Many of our business authors begin by developing their signature talk—it often becomes the foundation for their book.

What a Signature Talk is:

Your signature talk helps you communicate your story clearly and connect with your audience to get your message to the world, your brand, your unique point of view, and your story. This is an authentic, vulnerable, and real approach to connection, and education-based marketing.

What your Signature Talk Isn't:

  • Sales Pitch

  • Manipulative

  • Speech all About How Awesome you are

  • Comparing yourself to Others which may put others in a bad light

Know your Audience:

Know your audience so your message reaches the right people. Otherwise, it may fall on deaf ears. Take your time and decide who you want to help, and what problem you will solve for them.

Tell Your Story:

Let your audience know who you are and why your message matters. When people can see themselves in your story, they connect more deeply with your work.

Share experiences that shaped your perspective and the lessons you learned along the way. Authenticity builds trust; vulnerability invites understanding. Your story doesn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful—it only needs to be real.

Speaking from lived experience reminds listeners that growth and success are possible for them too.

Title Selection:

Your title should convey your message in a way that contributes to the benefits you will provide your audience.

Titles that include

How To

How to get __________ by ___________

Numbered

3 Steps to ______________

Assertive Truth Statement

I Got ____ and So can you!

I Got thin and so can you! (that one is a bit cheesy but you get my meaning)

Timed

I'll show you how to ________ in ________ months/weeks/days/hours.

Signature Talk Structure:

  • Intro with Qualifications: What do you do, where are you from?

  • Authentic Story: What connects you to your audience, How did you solve this problem for yourself?

  • 3-5 Solution Strategies: Solve the problem, no fluffy nonsense. Keep it real, clear, and organized.

  • Offer one thing - too many products or services will confuse your audience. Get clear on one offer.

This should be fun and easy, take your time, ask yourself these questions, and determine your next steps. Having this talk on hand for any potential speaking engagement will make you more attractive to those looking for speakers, especially if they know you already have something on hand to be of service to their staff, members, or community.
